Valuing Pollination as an Ecosystem Services: The Case of Hand Pollination for Cocoa Production in Ghana
نویسندگان
چکیده
The promotion of cocoa farm productivity has necessitated the intensification input use with ensuing loss natural pollinators. Ghana Cocoa Board’s (COCOBOD) remedy to declining pollinator population is addressed in rolling out hand pollination 2016/17 crop year. Applying contingent valuation on field data covering 608 farmers five growing regions, we estimate value services industry and willingness pay for service. We find that are willing improve their yields. Farmers averagely at $1.3 per acre land. Extrapolated cover all cultivated lands 2017/18 year, Ghana’s $6.1 million annum. Hand can farms yields given statistically significant mean difference between hand-pollinated non-hand-pollinated farms. Having established from decline need effective support productivity, it imperative COCOBOD ramp up strategies preserving ecology safe guard industry.

متن کاملValuing Insect Pollination Services with Cost of Replacement
Value estimates of ecosystem goods and services are useful to justify the allocation of resources towards conservation, but inconclusive estimates risk unsustainable resource allocations. Here we present replacement costs as a more accurate value estimate of insect pollination as an ecosystem service, although this method could also be applied to other services. The importance of insect pollina...
متن کاملCrop pollination services
Crop pollination by bees and other animals is an ecosystem service of enormous economic value (Losey andVaughan 2006; Allsopp et al. 2008). Pollination can increase the yield, quality, and stability of crops as diverse as almond, cacao, canola, coffee, sunflower, tomato and watermelon. Indeed, Klein et al. (in press) found that 75% of globally important crops benefit from animal pollination. Th...
متن کاملEvaluating the Correlation Between Pollination Ecosystem Service and Landscape Pattern metrics (Case Study: Qazvin Province)
Pollination is an ecological service with high economic values related to human and ecological wellbeing. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between landscape complexity and pollination service (bee) in Qazvin province at the landscape scale. Landscape pattern metrics (Number of Patches (NP), Patch Richness (PR), Edge Density (ED), and Shannon Index (H)), as a proxy of landscape comple...
